Bone grafting
Tooth loss doesn’t go unnoticed by the body. Even with the loss of one tooth, irreversible processes start developing in the oral cavity: a row of teeth begins to shift, the chewing load is redistributed and the bone gradually atrophies.
Bone grafting can be necessary if an implant is needed but the current volume of your jawbone is not strong enough to support one, if fitted.
Bone grafting can be performed on the upper or lower jaws and is often conducted under local anaesthetic or light sedation.
Indications for bone grafting
- Bone loss
- Dental injuries, bone damage or pathology
- Periodontitis
- Preventive measure after tooth extraction
Types of bone tissue augmentation
A dental surgeon selects a method for restoring the volume of bone tissue based on a number of parameters: the width and height of the bone, its structure, the presence of weakened areas, the location of large blood vessels and the mandibular nerve.
Direct or indirect sinus lift is performed on the upper jaw, to add bone to your upper jaw in the area of your molars and premolars. It’s sometimes called a sinus augmentation. The bone is added between your jaw and the maxillary sinuses, which are on either side of your nose.
Guided bone regeneration is an increase in bone width or height by a bone graft (auto and xeno material) which is held in a given place by a special plate – membrane fixed with mini-screws.
Bone augmentation is the extension of bone tissue vertically and horizontally of the alveolar ridge using an auto bone block taken from the donor site of the lower jaw.
